Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
